Energy & Heating

How much electricity does a heat pump use?

Heating is by far the biggest expense for a homeowner. So how much of your electricity bill actually goes to the heat pump?

The Big Savings

A common misconception is that heat pumps 'use a lot of electricity'. The truth is that if you switch from direct electric heating to a heat pump, your consumption will drop drastically. A good heat pump provides about 3-5 times as much heat as it consumes in electricity (this is called the SCOP value).

Luft-luftvärmepump

  • Annual usage: ca 4 000 – 6 000 kWh
  • Best for: Open floor plans and smaller homes

Depending on house insulation and location in Sweden.

Bergvärmepump

  • Annual usage: ca 5 000 – 8 000 kWh
  • Best for: Large houses (high initial investment but low running cost)

Geothermal heat has the best efficiency even when it's extremely cold outside.

Can I combine with solar panels?

Unfortunately, solar panels produce the most electricity in the summer, while the heat pump uses the most in the winter. To optimize heating, we instead recommend looking at an hourly rate contract and installing a system that directs the heat pump to work hardest during the cheap night hours.
