The old electrical panels (fuse boxes) with porcelain screw fuses have served Swedish households well for decades. But today's electricity needs are enormously greater than in the 70s — and the old fuse boxes are in many cases directly unsuitable for modern equipment. Upgrading is an investment in both convenience and, above all, safety.
What is the difference? Fuse vs. Automatic Circuit Breaker
| Feature | Old porcelain fuse | Modern circuit breaker (MCB) |
|---|---|---|
| Resetting | Replace the fuse | Flip the switch |
| RCD | Rarely included | Always integrated |
| Selectivity | Limited | Precise, per circuit |
| Traceability | No labels | Labeled circuits |
| Lifespan | Unlimited (if handled right) | 30–40 years |
4 Reasons to Upgrade Now
1. Built-in RCD — Life Insurance
The absolutely most important advantage. A residual-current device (RCD) detects if current begins to "leak" — for example, if an electrical appliance gets an insulation fault and the casing becomes live. It trips in < 30 milliseconds — faster than a cardiac arrest can be triggered. Old fuse boxes almost always lack RCDs.
2. End of the Fuse Hunt
With automatic circuit breakers (miniature circuit breakers), the search for the right porcelain fuse in the cleaning cabinet is over. If the power trips, you simply flip the switch back up. You also see exactly which circuit has tripped thanks to clear labels.
3. Prepared for Modern Equipment
Are you going to install an EV charger, solar panels, or a new heat pump? These require:
- Separate circuit with the right fuse size
- Space in the panel's rails for new circuit breakers
- RCD type B (EV charger) or AC (heat pump)
Old fuse boxes lack the capacity to handle this safely and professionally.
4. Lower Home Insurance Premium
Several insurance companies provide a discount on the home insurance if you have an inspected, modern electrical installation with an RCD. Check with your company!
What Does an Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost?
| What is included | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| New electrical panel (standard panel, 16 slots) | 5,000–8,000 SEK materials |
| Labor electrician (incl. protocol) | 8,000–15,000 SEK |
| Total, excl. ROT deduction | 13,000–23,000 SEK |
| ROT deduction (30% on labor) | -2,400 to -4,500 SEK |
