Tibber Smart Charging Guide: Charge the EV When It's Cheapest

How to optimize your EV charging with Tibber and smart chargers to drastically reduce your electricity costs.

Tibber Smart Charging Guide: Charge the EV When It's Cheapest

As more and more Stockholmers acquire electric cars, the question of when to charge becomes crucial for the electricity bill. The electricity price can vary from -0.10 SEK/kWh to 3.50+ SEK/kWh in the same 24-hour period on Nordpool. By combining an hourly price contract from Tibber with a smart EV charger, you can control the charging fully automatically to the cheapest hours.

What is Tibber Smart Charging?

Tibber is an electricity company that sells electricity at the Nordpool hourly purchase price, with a fixed markup (approx. 7–12 öre/kWh + 39 SEK/month in app subscription). The Smart Charging (Smartladdning) feature in their app communicates directly with your EV charger or car and automatically starts charging when the spot price is at its lowest — usually between 01:00–06:00.

You just set:

  • Ready by: e.g., 07:30
  • Desired charge level: e.g., 80%

The app handles the rest completely automatically.

How much can you save?

The difference between an uncontrolled charge (when you plug in the car at 18:00) and Tibber Smart Charging is large:

Charging ScenarioAverage PriceCost (60 kWh)
17:00–20:00 (Rush hour)~2.00 SEK/kWh~120 SEK
01:00–06:00 (Night, Tibber Smart)~0.30 SEK/kWh~18 SEK
Savings per charge~102 SEK

If you charge at home 4 times a week = ~1,600 SEK/month in savings.

Which EV chargers work with Tibber?

For Smart Charging to work fully, an officially integrated EV charger is needed:

EV ChargerTibber SmartLoad BalancingPrice incl. installation (approx.)
Zaptec Go12,000–15,000 SEK
Easee Charge Lite10,000–14,000 SEK
Charge Amps Halo✅ (via app)13,000–18,000 SEK
Garo Entity Compact11,000–16,000 SEK

Prices include certified installation, and the Green Technology deduction (50%) is already deducted.

How do I get started? — 4 steps

  1. Choose and install a smart EV charger — we help you find the right model for your electricity grid and your car.
  2. Download the Tibber app and register an account. Choose an hourly price contract.
  3. Connect the EV charger in the Tibber app under Settings → Devices.
  4. Activate Smart Charging and enter the desired ready-by time. Done!

What happens if electricity is expensive all night?

If the spot price does not drop enough to have time to charge to the desired level by the set time, Tibber prioritizes that the car is ready anyway — the system then charges with what is available. You never risk driving away with an empty battery.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tibber Smart Charging

Does Smart Charging work if the WiFi goes down? The EV charger falls back to its last scheduled setting and charges anyway. If you have no setting, it starts immediately.

Can I use Tibber without a smart EV charger? Yes — Tibber works with any EV charger, but the Smart Charging feature requires an integrated unit. Without an integrated charger, you can schedule via the car's own system (if the car supports it).

Does it work with all EV models? Tibber supports direct integration with Tesla, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia EV, Volkswagen ID series, and more. EV charger integration is manufacturer-agnostic — works with all cars.
